- The 21st century is quickly
- approaching. And it seems to be that
- everyone wants to know what the future
- will bring. How will people live and
- work? What sort of food will we eat?
- What kind of cars will we drive? Will
- people find solutions to many of our
- environmental problems? Here are a
- few predictions about the future.
-
- The car of the future may be powered
- by electricity. Electric cars, which
- get their power from batteries,
- produce much less pollution than
- gasoline powered cars. Electric
- models that are being built right now
- can travel 120 miles before their

- bateries have to be recharged. Cars
- of the future may also have electronic
- dashboard maps, and a joystick instead
- of a steering wheel.
-
- People are finding some interesting
- ways to save our resources. For
- example, instead of plastic foam or
- paper containers, fast food
- restaurants of the future may serve
- food in packages you can eat! Some
- edible plates are already being made
- out of oatmeal and cornstarch. They
- aren't very tasty - but if you throw
- the plates away, they may provide food
- for wildlife.

- {ta{E{6 In the future, food will be grown in
- new ways. In a technique called
- hydroponics, vegetables are grown in a
- water solution instead of in soil.
- The plants are placed in an enclosed
- chamber. They aren't effected by the
- weather, and they can be grown all
- year round. Today it is expensive to
- grow foods this way. But huge
- hydroponic farms could be set up in
- space, on orbiting space stations.
- Then you could enjoy vegetables that
- were truly out of this world!
